Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music. Its been popular for some years now specifically in the UK, but has only recently blown up to high levels of popularity in North America. The main element of dubstep is heavy bass lines. The overwhelming bass is accompanied with reverberant drum lines and the occasional vocal. I hope you have good speakers, as dubstep needs some powerful bass for its full effects. So crank up the volume and try not to blow your ear drums to these wonderful bass-loaded creations.
Release: KOAN Sound - Funk Blaster EP [OWSLA]
A young new dubstep producer under the name KOAN Sound has come to light in the past year. He started off the year with his Max Out EP with Inspected Records which featured two outstanding dubstep tracks, Trouble in the West and Mr. Brown. Give these both a listen because even with the new EP, they are by far my favourite tracks by KOAN Sound. Both these tracks took the dub world by storm and were supported and played by a number of big name dub producers including Skrillex, Rusko, Feed Me, Gemini, and Dirtyphonics. KOAN Sound has developed a signature sound of his own, bringing in flavors from rock n roll, hip hop, and funk to produce a sort of dubstep that caters to much more than your classic bass head. His newest EP has been released on Skrillex's brand new record label, OWSLA, which is an obvious indication of Skrillex's rapid rise to stardom becoming number 1 in dubstep as if out of thin air. Skrillex took dubstep to a whole new level, to a point where his music has become mainstream. In addition to KOAN Sound, Skrillex has signed big and on-the-rise names like Skream, Porter Robinson, Zedd, and The M Machine.
The newest releases from KOAN Sound include 4 new originals featured on the Funk Blaster EP. KOAN Sound has brought in more of a glitch hop and funky sound to this EP in the tracks Flunk Blaster, Talk Box, and Meanwhile, In the Future, with The End sticking to more straight dubstep. All tracks are evidently KOAN Sound, this guy has really made a great sound for himself. My favourite from the EP is the ever so funky Funk Blaster, as it features a new glitchier take on the guitar sound used in Trouble in the West. Nonetheless, all the tracks are well done and deserve a listen.
